Life Style Changes

What is Your Cancer Risk?

Cancer kills 15 people every minute – WORLDWIDE – 21,918 people die of cancer every single  day. The statistics are shocking… But… there are things YOU can do today that are  remarkably effective at lowering your risk for most types of cancer.

All hope is not lost! Cancer is curable and preventable with a wise lifestyle.

Most people consider themselves well-informed about cancer and know cancer facts such  as… Smoking puts you at higher risk for lung cancer. Breast cancer can run in families.  Excessive alcohol consumption raises the risk of cancer of the liver.

Then there are lesser-known facts about cancer that you might not be aware of. Many of these are surprising and some are downright scary.

You may not know this, but your everyday habits including nutrition, environment, and activities play a SIGNIFICANT role in your risk of getting cancer. You could create your own quiz on your own life style. The type of questions you could ask yourself are:

  • What is your gender? Do you know which is more at risk?
  • What age group best describes you? The older you get, then what?
  • Which cooking oils do you prefer to use? Vegetable and canola are the worst.
  • How often do you eat processed foods? (For example: bread, cereal, cakes, cookies, chips, etc.)
  • How much of a sweet tooth do you have? Sugar and most sweeteners, are your worst enemy
  • Where do you usually carry your cell phone? On you in a pocket?
  • How often do you drink sodas or sweet drinks? (e.g. regular soda, diet soda, sweet tea, fruit punch, etc.)
  • How many nights per week do you fall asleep with the TV or light on?
  • How often do you Microwave your food? This is controversial.
  • How often do you use non-stick cookware? Surprised?

Do you smoke? Cigarette smoke contains over 7,000 chemical compounds and 70 of these are known carcinogens. Contained in a single cigarette are thousands of toxic chemicals like lead, tar, and arsenic. Some more familiar chemicals are acetone (nail polish remover), formaldehyde (embalming fluid), and even menthol (rocket fuel).

Did you know that fluoride promotes cancer? Research indicates a close connection between fluoride and an increased cancer risk. Fluoride has been linked to an increase in oral, bone, liver, thyroid, and other cancers. As it turns out, fluoride turns normal cells into cancer cells, increases tumor growth rate, and also increases cancer death rates.

I was surprised to discover that prediabetes increases the chance of developing cancer by 15%. People diagnosed with prediabetes (with higher blood glucose levels not yet developed into diabetes) are at higher risk for developing cancer. Studies show that these people are most at risk for endometrial, stomach, liver, pancreatic, breast, and colorectal cancers.

I would like to introduce you to Dr. Patrick Quillin who is an internationally recognized expert in the area of nutrition and cancer. He has 30 years’ experience as a clinical nutritionist, of which 10 years were spent as the Vice President of Nutrition for Cancer Treatment Centers of America where he worked with thousands of cancer patients in a hospital setting. He has earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in nutrition and is a registered and licensed dietitian (RD & LD) and Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) with the American College of Nutrition. He has appeared on over 40 television broadcasts and 250 radio shows in his country and is a regular speaker for medical and trade conventions. Dr. Quillin’s 17 books have sold over 2 million copies and include the best sellers HEALING NUTRIENTS and BEATING CANCER WITH NUTRITION. He edited the textbook, ADJUVANT NUTRITION IN CANCER TREATMENT and organized the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd international symposia on “Adjuvant Nutrition in Cancer Treatment. He is listed in “Who’s Who in Science”.

I quote Dr. Patrick Quillin: The planet earth is one of the greatest pharmacies ever invented. And we’re ignoring most of it. We go down to the pharmacy and spend $280 billion a year on prescription drugs in the USA. According to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, there’s 140,000 Americans each year who die from the on-label use of prescription drugs. That means following doctor’s prescriptions − 140,000 die!

That means that somewhere around the 3rd leading cause of death in America is from using drugs that may be useful, but oftentimes are toxic. Why not try nutrition first? In many cases it can solve the problem”.

I remember as a child growing up in the Eastern Cape in South Africa, besides picking the leaves for my silk worms, eating those delicious purple mulberries.

And what about those figs that used to just grow wild in the back garden? Between the birds, my brother and sister, I ate them with gusto – little did I know what a favour I was doing for myself.

And of course my real favorite, prickly pears bought on the side of the road anywhere in the Eastern Cape early in the new year.

Dr. Quillin explains about the significance of the colour of fruit and vegs – in those pigments: the red, orange, yellows, dark colors lye the secrets to health.

Mulberry is a dark purple color and is so healthy for cancer suffers.  What you have is Mother Nature’s sunshine coming down and hitting the chlorophyll and the chloroplast, and through photosynthesis is making sugar. And from that comes all of life. That’s the beginning of all life on earth.

How does the plant protect itself from the damaging effects of sun? You’ve got sunlight that is mutagenic & carcinogenic – it’s a damaging X-ray.

About 20,000 different bioflavonoids and about 800 different carotenoids are in colorful fruits and vegetables, and they protect the plant from the sun and from the effects of photosynthesis. The planet earth is the greatest pharmacy ever created and we are ignoring it and getting cancer says Quillin.

Given that, choose fruits and vegs that would be not only tasty but not readily available in the stores which means they have not been commercially exposed to chemicals on their leaves nor at their roots. For instance, figs. Figs don’t travel well. That’s why most people don’t find them in the stores and most people, including myself, eat figs from friend’s gardens.

But in fact figs are not just a delicious taste, but a super-food, there’s a phyto-chemical in it called ficin, which is a proteolytic enzyme able to metabolize protein into amino acids. Your body uses amino acids to build structures and substances that are based on protein, such as muscle, connective tissues and other enzymes which assist in cancer prevention. The National Cancer Research Institute has been researching “ficin” hoping to find a synthetic analogue so they can make a patented drug. Meanwhile, you have access to that through fresh figs. It’s a powerful anti-cancer fruit like mulberries with no bioregulators.

This is where it really hits me how powerful nature is. And I’m hoping that I can infect you with a sense of respect for what the universe has given us in our good Mother Earth.
